Project Overview. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail System serves Jersey City, Hoboken and Bayonne, New Jersey. The route is an inverted 'Y' shape with a stem running from Hoboken through the waterfront area of Jersey City and two branches extending to West Jersey City and Bayonne. It connects with the PATH system at the current terminals at both Newport Pavonia and Exchange Place. The line was the first in the United States to be built under the Design-Build-Operate-Maintain (DBOM) arrangement. The line utilizes 29 modern, low-floor light rail vehicles which passengers enter directly from a curb-level platform without climbing steps. The line operates mostly at ground level, with some short elevated sections. From Newport to Liberty State Park, the line turns with frequent street crossings and low speeds. South of Liberty State Park, in the West Jersey City area, the line is significantly more straight with minimal street crossings and reaching higher speeds.
