Project Overview. Hampton Roads Transit: Norfolk Light Rail Transit System, 'The Tide' is a 7.4-mile light rail line servicing Norfolk, Virginia.  The line begins at a western terminus near the Eastern Virginia Medical Center and travels east along a dedicated right-of-way through downtown Norfolk to Norfolk State University.  The project components include: an LRT system composed of 9 low-floor, 85-foot light rail vehicles, and an exclusive double-track guideway following the Norfolk Southern Railroad right-of-way.  Eleven stations are included, six of which include bus drop-off areas, and four park-and-ride areas.  Stations are being constructed as one car, 90-foot platforms mostly at-grade; however, they are being designed to facilitate the eventual expansion to three-car platforms.  An LRT vehicle storage and maintenance facility (VSMF) is to be constructed.
