The project involved the preliminary and final design for the rehabilitation of tunnel infrastructure spanning from Weehawken, New Jersey to Long Island City, Queens, passing through Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan. The scope included critical upgrades to ventilation and smoke evacuation systems, construction and improvement of exit stairways and shaft houses, installation of vertical discharge lines for tunnel sump pumps, and enhancements to electrical substations and associated equipment. These elements were designed to ensure safety, operational efficiency, and compliance with modern engineering standards across the tunnel network.
The primary objective of the project was the integration and modernization of mechanical and electrical systems within the tunnels. This included both the replacement and rehabilitation of ventilation and auxiliary power equipment to improve overall system performance and reliability. The project aimed at creating a cohesive and upgraded infrastructure capable of supporting long-term operational demands while enhancing safety and environmental control within the tunnel system
