The Canal Street Streetcar Project was developed by the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (NORTA) to restore and expand streetcar service along one of the city’s most historic transportation corridors. The project included the design of an approximately 5-mile streetcar extension running from the Canal Street Ferry terminal on the Mississippi River, through the Central Business District and Mid-City, to the cemeteries and City Park/Delgado Community College area, reconnecting major residential, commercial, and cultural destinations.
The project was part of a broader initiative to enhance regional mobility, improve transit accessibility, and support economic revitalization along the Canal Street corridor. By reintroducing modern streetcar service, the project strengthened connections within the city’s public transportation network while preserving the historic character of New Orleans’ streetcar system and supporting long-term transportation planning goals.
