The Cross County Extension of the Metrolink system was a major transit expansion that strengthened regional connectivity across the St. Louis metropolitan area by adding eight miles of new light rail service. The extension built upon the existing 38-mile system linking Scott Air Force Base and Shiloh, Illinois to Lambert–St. Louis International Airport, enabling improved access to employment centers, residential communities, and regional destinations.

The project included a significant reconstruction of the Forest Park Station and the addition of nine new stations—Skinker, University City–Big Bend, Forsyth, Clayton, Richmond Heights, Brentwood I-64, Maplewood – Manchester, Sunnen, and Shrewsbury–Lansdowne I44. Two of the new stations incorporated Park-Ride facilities to support commuter travel. Overall, the extension enhanced mobility, promoted transit-oriented development, and expanded the reach and effectiveness of the region’s light rail network
