The Canarsie Tunnel (14th Street Tunnel), which carries the MTA’s L Line between Manhattan and Brooklyn under the East River, sustained severe damage during Superstorm Sandy in 2012 when approximately seven million gallons of salt water flooded the tunnel. Two adjacent 7,100-foot sections were significantly impacted, requiring extensive rehabilitation. The recovery effort involved comprehensive repairs to the tunnel tube and the full replacement of rail systems and life safety equipment damaged by the storm.

The design-build rehabilitation also included upgrades and improvements to supporting infrastructure, including communications, electrical and power systems in substations and stations, 3rd rail replacement, work at the First Avenue substation, and installation of ADA elevators at First Avenue and Bedford Avenue Stations. The project restored critical transit service while modernizing key tunnel and station components to improve resiliency and long-term performance.
